Your Best Year Yet! – Part 3 – Creating Momentum

In Part 1 and 2 of ‘Your Best Year Yet’ we explored the ideas of ‘Reflecting’ and ‘Dreaming Forward’.  By now, you have an idea of what you would like to create for yourself in the year ahead, and what you can pull forward from the past that will help you be the person you’ve always know you can be.

Perhaps though, you feel a little stymied and concerned as your pesky gremlins recall lost dreams that you never got around to creating for yourself. Have no fear.  All you need is a little momentum.  So, what are some ways to get the ball rolling?

  1. Creating Momentum: In order to get things rolling in creating 2014 as your best year yet, try adopting some of these:
    1. Take one step.  I mean one really small step.  Something doable. If it isn’t doable, its not small enough. Try chunking it up.  For instance, if you want to call someone to ask them out for coffee, but it seems too big, try writing down the number on a post-it note and sticking it on your mirror.  Go out and do something fun and forget about calling until it feels right. Or, if you want to design a new website for your company, but find that every time you sit at your computer you just can’t get going, start by calling a friend who has a website you like and asking him about his website design.  Keep thinking momentum, even when the step seems ridiculously small.
    2. Keep focused on your successes.  They are fuel for your actions.  Keep a success journal if your gremlins make it difficult for you to recall all the spectacular things you have done in life. If your mind like to ruminate, throw it yummy stuff to chew on.
    3. Make space.  Let go of the old and worn out stuff of life – people, things, activities, and commitments, and make room for the unexpected delights that are waiting for you. Breathe.
    4. Capture it.  Get your thoughts down on paper and post photos, pictures or phrases up where they will ignite your passion.  My mirror is covered with scotch-taped scraps of paper with photos, phrases, and quotes – such as Rilke’s ‘Love the questions…’
    5. ‘Learn into it’ by taking action. You don’t need everything sorted out in advance.  The best way to learn and grow is by doing and taking chances.  There is magic in motion.  Buy the nifty Totally ADD magnet that I have on my fridge, “Just Start: Inspiration Will Come”.  What one tiny step could you take to get the momentum going?
    6. Dream a little.  You don’t have to know how it will all happen. There is a certain magic in trusting the process.  Hold your dreams loosely, and keep your eyes open.  Often a dream will come dressed a little differently than we first had envisioned.  Perhaps what crosses your path is even better than what you had envisioned for yourself.  Let go, trust and see what emerges.  You might be surprised at how life answers your intentions.
    7. Scared? Yep. Keep going.
    8. Create a team.  Having success partners helps.  Hire a coach, confide in a friend, and/or tell the world in a blog.  There is power in connecting and linking with like-hearted individuals when moving toward your dreams.

I’m looking forward to the unknown ways that I will connect this coming year with friends, family, clients, and even people I haven’t met yet.  It is a scrumptious thought to know that I can achieve my dreams while being playfully excited about the future.  In the meantime, I will dance around the living room with my dog in my arms, dreaming…

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions…  ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
