5 of theTop Public Relations Stunts of All Time

Public Relations stunts, campaigns and tools have been used for centuries to grab the attention of potential customers and clients.  A few of the most memorable are….

5. The Olympic Torch Relay –  Since 1936, the Olympic Torch Relay has generated publicity for athletes and sponsors in the months leading up to the Olympics.

4. The Beatles Final Gig – The rooftop of the Apple Records office in London played host to The Beatles final live performance.  The concert attracted so much attention that eventually the roads nearby had to be closed by police.  Anyone remember another band pulling a similar stunt in 2009?

3. That Dress – A unknown model named Liz Hurley arrived at her then boyfriend’s premiere – Four Weddings and a Funeral.  The Versace dress she wore was eye catching – adorned with safety pins, and photos flew around the world.  The next Liz Hurley was a household name.

2. FBI’s Most Wanted  List – In 1949, a reporter asked former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to list his most-wanted criminals.  The story was a hit, so the FBI started using the list as a way to bring media attention to the fugitives.  A 94% success rate keeps the list going strong.

1. The Goodyear Blimp – Goodyear built its first PR airship in 1925, and used it to tour sporting and entertainment event all over the USA.  As time went by, the company started offering  the blimps for use by TV companies as a vantage point to film from in exchange for mention of the Goodyear name.
